The Little DHTML Rocket Ship that Could

Ever since I saw the DHTML Bomberman I always had a small soft spot in my heart for quirky and interesting DHTML ideas. However, there is a larger and more angry part of my heart that hates when ideas get overused and hackneyed that you want to gouge your eyes out the next time you see it. Need I remind you of mouse trails and fades from the days Web1.0 and now Lightbox and Cover Flow from Web2.0. There is a reason why the people that came up with the idea are geniuses and all of you that just steal it from Dynamic Drive are hacks.

Here’s how you do it right… First, come up with a good idea (I know, it’s really hard) and then implement it using some tools or write it from scratch. Case and point, Zachstronaut. With what he know about absolute positioning and image swapping he came up with a quirky and simple design and implemented it all himself. Watch the rocket ship blast off and if you scroll all the way to the bottom you can watch it crash land into the moon. Contain your exciting… but at least it’s not obnoxious or in your way and it adds personality to the site.
